The Royal Game Cigar
The story behind GTO's new Royal Game cigar starts not in a humid tobacco field, but in a dusty archive filled with old family ledgers and documents. It was here that Dr. Oscar Rodriguez, the founder of GTO, rediscovered a blending formula left behind by his grandfather, a master tobacco grower and blender. The aged, first-generation Cuban seed tobacco used in the blend was grown on the family farm in the Valle del Cibao, the Dominican Republic's premium tobacco heartland. Rodriguez was struck by the elegant complexity of the blend. He was also fascinated by a handwritten note on the final page of his grandfather’s blending book: “For the Royal Game only.” This intriguing phrase became the cigar's name and its guiding principle, hinting at a blend made for life's most thoughtful, deliberate, and rewarding moments—much like a game of chess.
The blend and the burn, The Royal Game showcases the artistry of GTO's masterful rollers, or torcedores. The cigar features a blend of aged tobaccos, 10-years in aging process. The burn is slow and even, allowing the smoker to fully appreciate the complex flavor profile. The smoke is thick and creamy, filling the air with a rich aroma that blends with hints of toasted nuts and aged oak. The cigar's profile is well-balanced, a harmony of subtle sweetness, earthy tones, and a gentle peppery spice.
The story for this cigar places it in the hands of two cousins, Oscar and Rogelio. They meet on a cool evening at Tabacalera GTO Dominicana Factory, for their weekly chess game. A beautiful wooden chessboard sits between them, the polished pieces gleaming under the soft light. Oscar produces a box of the newly released GTO Royal Game." these are special," he says, handing one to Rogelio. "A blend based on a family secret." As they toast and light the cigars, the aroma of aged tobacco and bourbon fills the space, adding to the evening's ambiance. The game is a slow, methodical affair. The cousins' moves mirror the cigar's development—each thoughtful, deliberate, and building to a final, satisfying conclusion. The conversation is quiet and interspersed with the quiet puffs of smoke. The Royal Game rewards their patience, revealing new layers of complexity with each stage of the chess match. Oscar takes a deep draw as he makes a strategic move, his expression softening as he exhales a cloud of fragrant smoke. "This is a chess player's cigar, Rogelio," he says with a smile. "You can't rush it. It forces you to be deliberate."
The game reaches its final moments. Oscar, contemplating his final move, draws on the last third of his cigar. The flavor deepens, a final, rich crescendo of spice and sweetness. With a quiet nod, he places his rook, delivering a checkmate. Speculative notes based on GTO's blending style. Considering the "Royal Game" is named for a chess match, its flavors reflect a smooth yet deliberate experience. The flavor evolution is:
First third: A smooth and creamy opening with subtle sweetness, Bready mouth feel with hints of cedar or nuts,
Second third: The blend develops more complexity. This is where notes from the aging appear, with flavors of oak, vanilla, or caramel. Earthy tones and rich coffee or cocoa also emerges.
Final third: The flavor profile intensifies, adding a distinct spiciness that builds in strength, providing a powerful finish to the smoking experience.
